This is a Meta Tag Tutorial. We will teach you everything you wanted to know about meta tags.

What are Meta Tags?

There is a myth that using keywords in meta tags will help you get free search engine placement. This is partially true. Meta tags are simply HTML code that goes at the top of your page. Meta tags are hidden from normal viewing, but when a search engine reads them, it gives additional information about the page. These are very important, but they will not guarantee top placement in search engines. Here is a list of meta tags and what they do:

  • Content-Type - this meta tag gives a character set and is very important. Without a character set browsers will not know how to translate your page!
  • keywords - This lists what keywords are on your document. You will be penalized if you don't actually use them though.
  • description - most search engines use this when they list your site in search engines. It should briefly describe your page.
  • robots - you can control how robots ( spiders ) scan your site.
  • pics-label - allows authors to rate their pages as safe for kids and adults, some search engines penalize you for not having this. Some people cannot see your page if you don't have this. Get one free at ICRA.org
  • Content - Language - similar to character encoding, but also lets search engines know what language your page is in.
  • refresh - Jumps to another page after a certain amount of time.
  • expires - used to control the cache, forcing new versions of the page to be downloaded, thus showing the changes you made.
  • Content-Script-Type - shows the default scripting language, such as javascript
  • MSSmartTagsPreventParsing: TRUE - TRULY EVIL! Microsoft has software that remakes your page, putting their advertising all over it. Use this to prevent that!
  • googlebot: - used to control how google scans your site.
  • pragma - used to control the cache, and how often people get fresh copies of your page.

All of these can be looked up in your favorite search engine to see exactly how it is done. The main thing you should learn from this tutorial is that if you don't use the keywords in your document, but you use in them the meta tags, you'll be penalized!.

Which Meta Tags are Necessary?

There are many meta tag generators available, and many free sites to analyze your meta tags. If you view the source of this page, you'll see which meta tags we found to be important. Depending on what you want your page to do, you'll want to use specific meta tags too. If you simply want more traffic, use the same meta tags that we use on this page, replacing the keywords and description with your own!
